Small, but not to be sneezed at. This ASUS RS300-E8-PS4 may only have one of the smaller E3 CPUs installed, but it has some crafty tricks to put other servers in its pocket. But first, let's start from the beginning.
This 1U machine is based on a Haswell platform, the mainboard is an ASUS P90-C/4L, which offers a number of expansion options in addition to the processor and RAM. In addition to a PCIe 3.0 x16 full-profile "half-length" slot, you will also find another PCIe 3.0 x8 low-profile "half-length" slot.
In addition, there are plenty of SATA3, 4 Intel I210 1GbE network ports and USB 3.0 connections.
The logical part of the brain in this machine is an Intel Xeon E3-1240 V3 that works with 4 cores / 8 threads and a basic speed of 3.40 GHz. This processor of the Haswell generation can also clock up to 3.80 GHz and is comparatively economical with a maximum TDP of 80W.
It offers 4 8GB ECC UDIMM memory slots as buffer memory, for a total of 32GB. The modules, equipped with SK Hynix chips by the manufacturer Kingston, achieve a speed of 10600R (1333MHz) or more.
The real strengths, however, are hidden. Thanks to a modified cooling concept, the machine can be relatively quiet when idle (we measured 51db) and can also cope with high permanent ambient temperatures of up to 40°C. Less cooling is needed, which saves money and protects the environment.
In addition to this well thought-out concept, ASUS has of course again made clever adjustments to the BIOS and the overall impression. The machine can of course be fully remotely maintained, thanks to ASWM6 (the required licence dongle is included), but also conveniently administered locally thanks to mirrored VGA ports (front and rear).
All in all, a really round (angular) box that skilfully puts its competitors in its pocket. Smart features, an open design and high reliability really make this system a no-brainer, whether it's a firewall, Ceph node, VM host or efficient small server.
The machines were formerly part of a supercomputer at a central German university. They were used there as Ceph nodes and were replaced on a regular basis.
All systems have been tested, are technically flawless, but may visually show signs of use.
